Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal Neuralgia can be excruciatingly painful for those who suffer with it. It is inconvenient at best and very intolerable. Often times it is mistaken for dental pain and those who suffer from it often first seek help from their dentist before getting a proper diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Often people will experience its onset after dental work, but that is not necessarily the cause of it. Dental work is hard on a person's constitution, and it may cause a dis-ease state to erupt, but hasn't necessarily casued the problem.
Trigeminal Neuralgia often strikes people over age 50 and is more common in women than in men. It affects the Trigeminal nerve which runs from the ear, across the cheek and around the mouth and chin. An estimated 1 in 15,000 people are afflicted with Trigeminal Neuralgia. There are probably more than that.
Conventional treatment consists of pain medication. These don't work for everyone, and even if they do, they do not decrease the frequency of flare ups. Sometimes even anti-seizure medications are prescribed, but the side effects of those drugs are often as intolerable as the pain. Sometimes doctors will resort to surgery to remove blood vessels or damage or deactivate the trigeminal nerve. But, like any surgery, it is risky and it doesn't always work.
Homeopathy takes an approach to Trigeminal Neuralgia that is different than most other chronic dis-ease. For most chronic dis-ease, we treat the entire symptom picture. With Trigeminal Neuralgia, we often need to first treat the acute portion of the dis-ease; that is, the flare-ups, which often are worse in winter. Once the flare-ups are under control, a constitutional remedy can be introduced to help prevent the return of Trigeminal Neuralgia.
