7 Remedies To Have On Hand For Hot Weather

by | Jul 15, 2015 | Heat Exhaustion, Sunstroke

We are moving into the hottest weather of the year.  It is not too late to get these remedies and keep them handy with the instructions on what to take, just in case you need them.

hea-exhaustion-and-heat-strokeSunstroke can be dangerous, and we certainly don’t want anything to get elevated to that level.  Prevention is the best cure for Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke or Sunstroke.  If it is too hot for you, stay indoors in the air conditioning.  If you don’t have air conditioning, go to a movie just to cool down.

It is also important to replenish your electrolytes.  Everyone thinks of Gatorade, but that is really not a very healthy option, nor is it the least expensive option.

To make your own electrolyte beverage, Squeeze the juice of one lemon and one lime into a Quart Jar.  Add 1/8 tsp Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan salt.  If you want it sweet, you could add some honey.  I don’t do that.  Then fill to the top with clean, filtered (if you have it) water and ice. Shake well. You could add different fruit, strawberries instead of limes, for example. You could also blend watermelon and limes with the salt and ice. You might want to use the blender if you are using chunky fruit.

If You Can’t Prevent It….

But sometimes, we overdo it and we need help.  Below are some good remedies for when you get overheated. These are all common remedies and are available in 30C at most health food stores and other places where remedies are sold. Most are also in remedy kits, but Glonoinum and Natrum Carbonicum may not be.  Please note that if the patient is suffering from Sunstroke, this is a medical emergency.  The remedies do not replace a trip to the doctor.  Give them on the way to the doctor.

Aconite:  Sunstroke that comes on rapidly with great intensity.  There is strong sensitivity to light and a headache.  The pupils will be constricted.  Worse from falling asleep in the sun. The patient may fear that they will die.

Belladonna:  Use this when you have a pounding, throbbing headache with a red face.  The body may be cold or just the hands and feet might be cold. The face will be warm to hot.  If you have no other, give Belladonna if it is close to fitting the situation and symptoms presented.

Carbo Vegetabilis:  Weakness and collapse after exposure to the heat and sun.  Fainting from heat exhaustion.  The patient may be cold and clammy and has nausea.  Diarrhea after exposure to the heat and sun.

Gelsemium:  Weak and tremulous after exposure to the sun.  Face flush and head is congested.  Vertigo and dizziness. Headache on the top of the head.  May have an attitude of not caring about anything.

Glonoinum:  Violent throbbing or bursting headache with a flushed face and visible pulsation of the carotid arteries.  Vertigo, dizziness, hot dry skin, frequent urination, drowziness.  May be confused about location. Better wearing a hat.

Natrum Carbonicum:  Weakness after walking in the sun.  Confusion and vertigo after exposure to the sun.  Heaviness and dullness in the head. Severe headache after exposure to the sun, especially if there is a history of heat exhaustion.

Natrum Muriaticum: Thirsty, mouth is very dry.  Sparks in front of the eyes.  You feel really dehydrated.  I have used this many times for clients and family.

How to Dose the Remedies

If you use the Boiron remedies in the blue tubes from the store, 2-3 pellets is a dose.  Otherwise, follow the instructions included with the remedy.  If the patient is just overheated, give as needed, perhaps 1x an hour until they feel better.  If it is Sunstroke, give a 30c dose every 5 – 10 minutes on your way to the doctor.

Chronic Overheating

If you have a history of chronic overheating or sunstroke, this will require a constitutional remedy.  Please schedule your appointment today.

Meet Kathryn Berg the Classical Homeopath at Lotus Homeopathy, Inc.

Some of you know me, others of you may have heard of me. And for most, you probably have no clue about me or my business. So I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself, my family, my business, why I am a homeopath and how I became a homeopath—not necessarily in that order.

Like many people, I found out about homeopathy accidentally. I fell down while walking my Akita pup on an icy sidewalk on a typical Minnesota winter day. I was scheduled to go to a friend’s house later that day, so when I did, I asked her for some ice. You need some Arnica, she told me. Arnica? What’s that? She explained that Arnica is a homeopathic remedy for trauma.

At the time, the only place to get homeopathic remedies was a book and herb store in South Minneapolis. So I went there to get some. When I got there, I decided I should read some books so I actually knew what I was doing. I left with the Arnica 30c and three books. By the time I got done reading them, I knew I wanted to be a homeopath.

It was only several years later that I realized that I was attracted to homeopathy as a profession because I am a problem solver. It is what drives me. There is nothing like a well chosen homeopathic remedy to solve problems.

At the time I decided to become a homeopath, there wasn’t even a school here in in Minnesota. But eventually, my homeopath and his business partner started the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy. I was a graduate of the third class. At the time I went there, it was a part time program taking three and a half years! Since then I have studied with numerous other well known and respected homeopaths in continuing education studies.

While I do work with all sorts of folks with a variety of conditions, I really have studied how to treat people suffering from PTSD, health issues related to aging women, and children’s health issues of all sorts, including autism. I have also been successful in removing blockages to healing due to suppression of symptoms by western medicine. I chose those specialties because people really suffer who have those forms of dis-ease, and Western Medicine doesn’t seem to have much of a solution for them.

After over twenty years of practice, I still get excited for clients when a remedy has helped them heal.

So that is about my business. Now, a little bit about me.

I have two adult sons in their early twenties, so I have shed the title of “Soccer mom”. My husband and I are empty nesters living in Woodbury, MN. For fun, I like to play piano, sing, sew, garden, hike, and travel. I am in a community choir. I also enjoy cooking healthy meals and, out of necessity, am an expert at cooking for special diets.
