How Do You Balance Hormones Naturally? Maybe Balance Isn’t the Real Goal

by | Jun 22, 2026 | Hormones, Hormonal headaches

A drawing of scales out of balance with hormonal symptoms on one side and relief on the other.“How do you balance hormones Naturally?” This is one of the questions I hear most often from women in perimenopause and menopause.

I understand the question.

When your body suddenly starts acting like it has joined a jazz band without telling you, it is natural to wonder what needs to be balanced.

  • Hot flashes.
  • Night sweats.
  • Sleep disruption.
  • Mood swings.
  • Emotional reactivity.
  • That feeling of, “I do not seem to be responding to life the way I used to.”

It makes sense that women start looking for answers. And when they search online, they usually find a familiar list:

  • Eat better.
  • Sleep more.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Take this supplement.
  • Try that herb.
  • Support your liver.
  • Track your cycle.
  • Avoid sugar.
  • Exercise, but not too much.
  • Relax, but also get everything done.

Ugh!

Is all of that helpful? Sometimes.

Is it overwhelming? Often.

And really, some of that advice is a little uncertain.

Diet matters, of course. But diet alone may not stop night sweats, but with some experimentation and lots of journaling, you may find it helps a bit.

Sleep matters, but that advice is not very helpful when night sweats are the reason you are not sleeping.

Stress reduction matters, but I am pretty sure “reduce stress” has become the answer to every modern health question.

So yes, the basics matter. But for many women, the basics are not enough.

That is where I think we need a different conversation.

Maybe Hormonal Balance Is Not the Real Goal

We often talk about “balancing hormones,” but balance can be fragile. If something is balanced, it can tip out of balance again.

That may be exactly what midlife feels like. One decent night of sleep, followed by three rough ones. A few calm days, then suddenly everything feels irritating. A week without hot flashes, then they come back as if they were just away on a short vacation.

Balance is not a bad word. But I prefer the idea of harmony.

Hormones are not really a set of scales. They are more like an orchestra.

Estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, insulin, thyroid hormones, liver function, sleep, the nervous system, digestion, and emotional resilience are all part of the music.

When the orchestra is out of tune, you may notice hot flashes, night sweats, interrupted sleep, mood changes, or emotional dysregulation.

The goal is not to force one instrument to play louder. The goal is to help the whole system work together again.

The Problem With Chasing Symptoms

Many women try to solve each symptom separately.

Something for sleep…. Something for hot flashes…. Something for mood… Something for stress…. Something for energy.

Before long, your bathroom cabinet looks like it is preparing for a small wellness conference.

Now, I am not against supplements. I do use liver support and other natural supports when they are appropriate. The liver plays an important role in hormone metabolism. I have written more about that elsewhere and also discussed it on a podcast episode.

But supplements are not always the full answer. Some herbs and supplements may help some women for a while. But they are not necessarily meant to be taken forever, and they do not always address the deeper pattern behind the symptoms. I have written about this in the past as well.

That is the piece I think gets missed.

You are not having hot flashes in isolation. You are having hot flashes in the context of your whole life, your sleep, your stress response, your emotional patterns, your history, your sensitivity, and the way your body expresses imbalance.

That is why two women can both have night sweats and need completely different homeopathic remedies.

  • One woman may be overheated, irritable, and impatient, with a strong desire to be left alone.
  • Another may be weepy, chilly, and better from comfort.
  • Another may wake at 3 a.m. with her mind racing, unable to shut off her thoughts.
  • Another may feel emotionally reactive in a way that surprises her, as if her internal filter has gone missing.

They may all say, “My hormones are out of balance.”

But they are not expressing the same pattern. And in homeopathy, the pattern matters.

Homeopathy as a Lesson to the Body

Classical homeopathy is not about adding hormones. It is not about forcing the body into balance. It is not about taking one supplement every day forever in hopes that symptoms stay quiet.

Homeopathy works differently.

A well-chosen homeopathic remedy acts like a small lesson to the body. It gives the body information that helps it remember how to regulate itself more effectively.

The remedy is not doing the work for the body. The remedy is not the boss of the body. The remedy is more like the conductor to the vital force that helps the orchestra find its rhythm again.

And I am not the conductor either.

My job is to listen carefully, understand the pattern, and help choose the remedy that best matches what your body is expressing.

We choose the conductor together.

Then we watch how the body responds.

What Hormonal Harmony Can Look Like

When the body begins to harmonize, women often describe very visible and practical changes.

  • Hot flashes become less frequent, less intense, or disappear.
  • Night sweats settle down, which means sleep improves because the body is no longer waking up drenched or overheated.
  • Sleep becomes more restorative.
  • Mood swings soften.
  • Emotional reactivity decreases.
  • The little things do not feel quite so enormous.
  • Many women describe it as feeling more like themselves again.

That is the goal. Not perfection. Not pretending midlife is not a transition. Not forcing the body to act like it is 28.

The goal is steadiness, resilience and helping the body move through this transition with more harmony and less unnecessary suffering.

Natural Hormone Support Should Be Individualized

The problem with most “balance your hormones naturally” advice is that it treats women as if they are all having the same experience.

But they are not.

Perimenopause and menopause may be common, but the way they show up is deeply individual.

That is why the homeopathic appointment matters.

I want to know more than the fact that you are having hot flashes.

  • I want to know when they happen.
  • What they feel like.
  • What makes them better or worse.
  • How your sleep has changed.
  • How your mood has changed.
  • What feels most unlike you.
  • What else was happening in your life when symptoms began.
  • What your body is trying to tell us.

Because your symptoms are not random.

They are clues.

And when we understand the pattern, we can choose a remedy that supports the whole person, not just the most annoying symptom.

Although, to be fair, night sweats are very annoying.

So, How Do You Balance Hormones Naturally?

You start by realizing that “balance” may be too small a goal.

  • Yes, nourish your body.
  • Yes, support your liver.
  • Yes, pay attention to sleep, stress, food, and movement.

But if you are doing the reasonable things and still struggling with hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood swings, or emotional dysregulation, you may need a more individualized approach.

You may not need to chase every symptom.

You may instead need to help the whole system harmonize.

That is what homeopathy is designed to do.

It looks at the whole person, finds the pattern, and uses a carefully chosen remedy to help the body remember how to regulate itself.

Your hormones are not the enemy. Disharmony is the enemy.

And midlife does not have to feel like one long attempt to keep everything from tipping over.

If you are ready to talk through what is happening and explore whether homeopathy makes sense for you, schedule a Holistic Health Huddle appointment.

It is a complimentary Midlife Strategy Session, not a commitment to begin care.

It is just a conversation about what is going on, what you have tried, and what might help your body find its rhythm again.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Meet Kathryn Berg the Classical Homeopath at Lotus Homeopathy, Inc.

Some of you know me, others of you may have heard of me. And for most, you probably have no clue about me or my business. So I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself, my family, my business, why I am a homeopath and how I became a homeopath—not necessarily in that order.

Like many people, I found out about homeopathy accidentally. I fell down while walking my Akita pup on an icy sidewalk on a typical Minnesota winter day. I was scheduled to go to a friend’s house later that day, so when I did, I asked her for some ice. You need some Arnica, she told me. Arnica? What’s that? She explained that Arnica is a homeopathic remedy for trauma.

At the time, the only place to get homeopathic remedies was a book and herb store in South Minneapolis. So I went there to get some. When I got there, I decided I should read some books so I actually knew what I was doing. I left with the Arnica 30c and three books. By the time I got done reading them, I knew I wanted to be a homeopath.

It was only several years later that I realized that I was attracted to homeopathy as a profession because I am a problem solver. It is what drives me. There is nothing like a well chosen homeopathic remedy to solve problems.

At the time I decided to become a homeopath, there wasn’t even a school here in in Minnesota. But eventually, my homeopath and his business partner started the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy. I was a graduate of the third class. At the time I went there, it was a part time program taking three and a half years! Since then I have studied with numerous other well known and respected homeopaths in continuing education studies.

While I do work with all sorts of folks with a variety of conditions, I really have studied how to treat people suffering from PTSD, health issues related to aging women, and children’s health issues of all sorts, including autism. I have also been successful in removing blockages to healing due to suppression of symptoms by western medicine. I chose those specialties because people really suffer who have those forms of dis-ease, and Western Medicine doesn’t seem to have much of a solution for them.

After over twenty years of practice, I still get excited for clients when a remedy has helped them heal.

So that is about my business. Now, a little bit about me.

I have two adult sons in their early twenties, so I have shed the title of “Soccer mom”. My husband and I are empty nesters living in Woodbury, MN. For fun, I like to play piano, sing, sew, garden, hike, and travel. I am in a community choir. I also enjoy cooking healthy meals and, out of necessity, am an expert at cooking for special diets.
