Homeopathy In The Spring: Homeopathic Help For Tick Bites

by | May 1, 2020 | Ledum, Lyme disease, Silica, Tick borne disease, Uncategorized

Deer Tick

Although ticks are out and about most times of year, this is the season where ticks are thick! And this year, with CoVid 19 keeping everyone apart, more people than ever are trying to spend time outdoors.

If you are concerned about tick bites and possibly developing tick-bourne diseases such as Lyme and its co-infections, this is the blog post for you.

Homeopaths have been dealing with Tick Borne disease for as long as homeopathy has been around.  One of the most common remedies we use is Ledum.

Ledum Palustre

Ledum palustre comes from the Ericaceae family.  It is related to Rhododendrons, blueberries and cranberries and many other plants with which you are possibly familiar.  Plants from this family grow all over the world except Australia.  Ledum is an incredibly useful remedy, especially in Minnesota and other rural or woodsy areas.  It is for puncture wounds.  And what homeopaths consider puncture wounds might surprise you.

Insect bites are considered puncture wounds.  Getting your blood drawn is considered a puncture wound.  And of course, stepping on something sharp is also, as is getting poked, such as a scope for a surgical procedure.  Animal bites, like cat or dog bites would also be considered puncture wounds.

I have used this remedy for a client who was able to track her problems to a time she had her blood drawn.  Interestingly, although it is a remedy for puncture wounds, it is not a remedy for fear of needles.  As it is so useful for puncture wounds, you can guess that it is also a remedy for tetanus.

What To Do If You Find A Tick

Embedded Tick

  • Ledum 1M is the remedy you want to take ASAP if you find a tick has adhered to and embedded in a family member or a pet.  Take 2 doses a day for 7 to 10 days.  If you cannot get the head out, use Homeopathic Silica 30c, as it will drive foreign objects out of the body.
  • If you discover a tick that has just attached, but isn’t embedded, take Ledum 30C for 2-3 doses.  If you just find one crawling on you, I wouldn’t recommend you do anything, except continuing to look for more ticks.
  • Discovering a Bulls Eye Rash, calls for taking the Ledum 1M immediately AND go to your physician and get antibiotics.  If antibiotics will cause problems for you, I also have a clearing procedure I can recommend.  Schedule an appointment for that here.

How Else Can Ledum Be Used?

As usual, you can use homeopathic remedies for a variety of different complaints and Ledum is no exception.

  • You can use it for bruising from a sprain of a lower limb, with marked bruising and fluid escaping from the wound.
  • Ledum is well known as being a remedy for Rheumatic pains.  This is not a surprise, because the pains of Lyme are very Rheumatic in nature.
  • I also recommend Ledum for Puncture wounds, such as stepping on a nail, getting bit by a dog or cat (Ledum 200c), or pain from an injection (Ledum 30c).
  • In general, you would know to use Ledum in injury situations other than a puncture wound in that the injured person is chilled and is better from cold applications, such as ice. This is what we call a Strange, Rare and Peculiar (SRP) symptom in homeopathy.  And conversely, the person is worse from heat and hot or warm applications, even though they are chilly.

Ledum is not the only possible remedy to consider. You could also consider Hypericum which is also a remedy that is useful for puncture wounds. You would likely feel shooting pains if you need Hypericum.  You could also alternate the two remedies, which is often helpful, and an easy way to determine which remedy provides the greatest relief.

In general, if you are into hiking in the woods and camping, or like to go barefoot, you will likely need Ledum at some point in your life.

Be Prepared:  Get Your Ledum Here

If you are especially outdoorsy, you probably want to have Ledum on hand in the event of a tick bite.  Afterall, you may not find the tick during regular business hours.  I strongly recommend people bring it along on camping and hiking trips.

Meet Kathryn Berg the Classical Homeopath at Lotus Homeopathy, Inc.

Some of you know me, others of you may have heard of me. And for most, you probably have no clue about me or my business. So I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself, my family, my business, why I am a homeopath and how I became a homeopath—not necessarily in that order.

Like many people, I found out about homeopathy accidentally. I fell down while walking my Akita pup on an icy sidewalk on a typical Minnesota winter day. I was scheduled to go to a friend’s house later that day, so when I did, I asked her for some ice. You need some Arnica, she told me. Arnica? What’s that? She explained that Arnica is a homeopathic remedy for trauma.

At the time, the only place to get homeopathic remedies was a book and herb store in South Minneapolis. So I went there to get some. When I got there, I decided I should read some books so I actually knew what I was doing. I left with the Arnica 30c and three books. By the time I got done reading them, I knew I wanted to be a homeopath.

It was only several years later that I realized that I was attracted to homeopathy as a profession because I am a problem solver. It is what drives me. There is nothing like a well chosen homeopathic remedy to solve problems.

At the time I decided to become a homeopath, there wasn’t even a school here in in Minnesota. But eventually, my homeopath and his business partner started the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy. I was a graduate of the third class. At the time I went there, it was a part time program taking three and a half years! Since then I have studied with numerous other well known and respected homeopaths in continuing education studies.

While I do work with all sorts of folks with a variety of conditions, I really have studied how to treat people suffering from PTSD, health issues related to aging women, and children’s health issues of all sorts, including autism. I have also been successful in removing blockages to healing due to suppression of symptoms by western medicine. I chose those specialties because people really suffer who have those forms of dis-ease, and Western Medicine doesn’t seem to have much of a solution for them.

After over twenty years of practice, I still get excited for clients when a remedy has helped them heal.

So that is about my business. Now, a little bit about me.

I have two adult sons in their early twenties, so I have shed the title of “Soccer mom”. My husband and I are empty nesters living in Woodbury, MN. For fun, I like to play piano, sing, sew, garden, hike, and travel. I am in a community choir. I also enjoy cooking healthy meals and, out of necessity, am an expert at cooking for special diets.
