Is Your Hair Loss Making Life Hair-Raising?

by | May 8, 2019 | Hair Loss due to stress, PTSD Hair Loss

It’s not a secret or even controversial that stress can make your hair fall out.  PTSD and CPTSD, being expressions of stress, are often associated with hair loss. (This blog post does not deal with hair loss from hormonal shifts or aging.) Homeopathy can help.

I did a bit of research on the medical view of stress and hair loss.  Here is a summary of what the Mayo Clinic has to say about it.

woman whose hair is falling out. There are three ways that high stress can cause hair loss.  Do any of these fit your situation?

  • Telogen effluvium:  Where high stress causes large numbers of hair follicles to rest, meaning they don’t produce new hair.  Within a few months of the start of the resting phase, the hair might fall out suddenly, or you may notice it when combing or washing hair.  Kind of the opposite of Rip Van Winkle, who had lots of hair after a phase of rest!
  • Tricotillomania:  the irresistible urge to pull out your hair.  This could be your eyelashes, eyebrows, scalp or other hairy areas of your body.  This is a way people deal with stress, tension, loneliness, or other mental states that are distressing.
  • Alopecia areata:  This is the total or near-total hair loss that you sometimes see people get with seemingly no explanation.  Severe stress is one of the possible causes, according to western medicine.  The physiology of this type of hair loss is that the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles causing hair to drop off.

According to the Mayo clinic, “stress and hair loss don’t have to be permanent. If you get your stress under control, your hair might grow back.” [emphasis mine]

Notice that Mayo says it MIGHT grow back.  So if you do nothing other than managing to get your stress under control, you may have the good luck to get your hair back. Do you really want to leave it up to luck?

In this day and age, when men are shaving their heads, it is not a big deal to most men if it doesn’t grow back. But that isn’t the current fashion with women.  If it is a serious case of it, such as Alopecia areata, which is considered an autoimmune disorder, this would be more likely to increase stress in women and become a vicious cycle.  Living with hair loss makes life a hair-raising experience for some people.

End Hair Loss with Homeopathy

Using homeopathy gets to the root of the problem. The right remedy deals with the stress and accompanying emotions, and creates permanent healing rather than having to try to manage the stress.  If you are just managing your symptoms, when a trigger, such as a holiday or a family gathering, or even a movie, comes up, stress levels will rise and it could affect the ability to keep hair on your head.

I checked the homeopathic remedies that cover hair loss under all these circumstances.  Good News!  There are lots of them! That means that there are many options for healing this particular symptom associated with PTSD.

I did notice a pattern of the remedies that are known to heal this symptom.  They include remedies that have Anger, Fear, Anxiety, Grief, Hopelessness, Loneliness, and/or Disappointment associated with them.  Those are very common emotions that appear in people diagnosed with PTSD.  In the case of some of the remedies, these emotions are very suppressed as well.

There is also overlap with remedies that are known to help picking, scratching, and generally injuring oneself, as would be the case with Tricotillomania.  Read that blog post here.

How Can Homeopathy Help?

Balding SpotI had a client, “Eric”, who experienced Alopecia Areata hair loss as a teenager.  This young man was okay with being bald.  He had the type of personality where everyone liked him and he had more friends than he could count. When you are a teenaged boy, if you fit in, you don’t care about baldness. And he didn’t.

Lucky for him, his mother was wise enough to know that 16 year olds aren’t supposed to be bald.  She knew there was something underlying it and he was likely to develop more dis-ease, which leads to disease, as he aged.

Eric was a very kind young man, was definitely there for his friends, and over extended himself on behalf of others frequently.  He was a burn-the-candle-at-both-ends type of kid, even as a teenager. Eric spent some of his free time on music and other creative endeavours. However, he had boundary issues—everything came in that wasn’t part of himself, and everything that was himself went out to the benefit of his friends.

When he got the appropriate remedy, he first was able to recognize that he needed to take care of his own stuff first—homework, his job, etc. His friends still liked him with his new boundaries.  Once Eric started respecting his own boundaries, he got some peach fuzz on the top of his head.  Eventually, over the course of a year, he got his hair back.

Meet Kathryn Berg the Classical Homeopath at Lotus Homeopathy, Inc.

Some of you know me, others of you may have heard of me. And for most, you probably have no clue about me or my business. So I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself, my family, my business, why I am a homeopath and how I became a homeopath—not necessarily in that order.

Like many people, I found out about homeopathy accidentally. I fell down while walking my Akita pup on an icy sidewalk on a typical Minnesota winter day. I was scheduled to go to a friend’s house later that day, so when I did, I asked her for some ice. You need some Arnica, she told me. Arnica? What’s that? She explained that Arnica is a homeopathic remedy for trauma.

At the time, the only place to get homeopathic remedies was a book and herb store in South Minneapolis. So I went there to get some. When I got there, I decided I should read some books so I actually knew what I was doing. I left with the Arnica 30c and three books. By the time I got done reading them, I knew I wanted to be a homeopath.

It was only several years later that I realized that I was attracted to homeopathy as a profession because I am a problem solver. It is what drives me. There is nothing like a well chosen homeopathic remedy to solve problems.

At the time I decided to become a homeopath, there wasn’t even a school here in in Minnesota. But eventually, my homeopath and his business partner started the Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy. I was a graduate of the third class. At the time I went there, it was a part time program taking three and a half years! Since then I have studied with numerous other well known and respected homeopaths in continuing education studies.

While I do work with all sorts of folks with a variety of conditions, I really have studied how to treat people suffering from PTSD, health issues related to aging women, and children’s health issues of all sorts, including autism. I have also been successful in removing blockages to healing due to suppression of symptoms by western medicine. I chose those specialties because people really suffer who have those forms of dis-ease, and Western Medicine doesn’t seem to have much of a solution for them.

After over twenty years of practice, I still get excited for clients when a remedy has helped them heal.

So that is about my business. Now, a little bit about me.

I have two adult sons in their early twenties, so I have shed the title of “Soccer mom”. My husband and I are empty nesters living in Woodbury, MN. For fun, I like to play piano, sing, sew, garden, hike, and travel. I am in a community choir. I also enjoy cooking healthy meals and, out of necessity, am an expert at cooking for special diets.
