As we age, health issues pop up. But when you reach perimenopause or menopause, anything that comes up seems double the trouble. “OK. I’m dealing with all these other issues, so I can possibly else go wrong?” And then some annoying little pesky thing comes up.
Itchiness
The first annoying little pesky thing you might have experienced is itchiness. It might seem like maybe you have a vaginal yeast infection.
Or maybe not.
You just aren’t sure.
Maybe it doesn’t seem like the ones you used to get so that confuses the situation.
Sometimes people will buy over-the-counter products and they’ll help for a little bit, but once you stop using it comes back.
I have a really good solution for that. It is a probiotic called Saccharomyces Boulardii. And this is a great one for anything to do with yeast. It is a probiotic is made out of a different type of yeast and it helps can you get those critters. And by the way, it’s also helpful for traveler’s diarrhea or gastroenteritis (stomach flu). It’s really a very useful probiotic.
Here is how you should take it for a suspected yeast infection, or just itchiness.
- Take one capsule twice a day for a week.
- Then take one capsule once a day for an additional week.
It works really pretty quickly but you want to continue to take it beyond the point where you have symptoms to make sure that they don’t come back. There is no risk in doing this.
This process is also helpful if you get a yeasty overgrowth on your skin or mouth. You can boost the healing process on skin related outbreaks by also putting coconut oil on the yeasty eruptions.
Works for Thrush Too!
For those of you who might know someone who is nursing and develops thrush, this is an another use for Saccharomyces Boulardii. Follow the same instructions as indicated above.
Just a note about Saccharomyces boulardii: It doesn’t affect the gut in anyway other than healing it. Some people are negatively impacted by probiotics. You don’t have to worry about that happening with this one.
A homeopathic solution to add into the mix for yeasty outbreaks is to include Homeopathic Borax 30c. Take 2-3 doses per day until the symptoms are gone. Unlike the Saccharomyces Boulardii, do not continue taking after symptoms have healed. Click here to learn how to take homeopathic remedies.
Fishy Odor?
One of the other things that comes up for women, seemingly out of the blue, is bacterial vaginosis, which is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. It is bacteria that is typically there but you just have too much of it.
You know you have it when you have a really fishy odor that comes out, which is no fun at all.
There are two probiotics that are specifics for women’s reproductive tracts: Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus Reuteri. There are a couple of different ways you can purchase these probiotics.
One way is a product by Garden of Life and it’s a woman’s daily probiotic. If you’re used to taking a probiotic, you might want to switch to this one, at least for the time being, because it’s got those two additional women’s probiotics in it. It actually has 16 different probioticstrains.
If you want to take these but you don’t like the effects probiotics typically have on your digestive system, then you could purchase a product called Fem Dophylus. That one is just those two as opposed to 16 different strains.
You could take Fem Dophylus orally, which is what I would do with the Garden of Life product with the 16 different strains. But if you get the Fem Dophylus product you can also use it as a suppository and insert it vaginally at night before you go to bed. You don’t want to have it fall out during the day, so night is best. You’ll need to do that for a week or so. After the first day you’ll notice a difference, but, like with the Saccharomyces, you really need repeat it over the course of time to make sure everything is gone.
Watch What You Are Wearing
Finally, I encourage you to watch what you are wearing. With leggings being so common now, it seems that there is more perspiration with the tight-fitting polyester clothing, and these two annoying things are more likely to crop up. So look for leggings that have some cotton, such as jeans with Lycra in them. There are more knit leggings that are breathable too. This will help to prevent the itchiness and odor and also help it heal faster if you do develop it.
