Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? According to Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin, most people have forgotten their resolutions before the end of January. That somehow feels true to me—it lines up with my experience. In light of the way it makes me feel when I give up on a resolution, the last several years, I have chosen a word of the year and focused on that rather than making New Year’s Resolutions. It is like setting your intention for the year. It is less about specific goals, and more about how to live your life.
I have written my word of the year down, meditated on it, and generally had it visible so I can remember. I even put it on the lock screen of my iPhone, so I see it constantly! Whenever I felt a little off, or unfocused, I bring up my phone and look at it. It helps to reset my intention.
My Word for 2023
This past year’s word was Energize. I chose that word for multiple reasons, which you can read about here. I finally did join a gym, one that really suited the way I like to exercise and the way I NEED to exercise.
The energize became especially important in the early part of 2023 when the weather was so cold. It helped get me outside.
My Word of the Year for 2024
I came to choose this word because it kept coming up from multiple sources. Also, I like to choose a word that has many possible meanings. Connection is my word for 2024 for the following reasons.
- The most obvious is connecting my clients to their remedies.
- Learning and recognizing connections between remedies, what comes first, what could come next. This is an important part of being a homeopath. Since I chose this word, I am learning new things about remedies and what dis-ease they connect to as well.
- Connecting to more people is important as one ages. Social support is an important factor in happiness. Last year I didn’t attend as many Woodbury Chamber functions as I would have liked to have. Having that word on my lock screen on my phone should help remind me.
- Also, connecting to clients, people on my mailing list, social media and phone calls is also an important part of my word of the year. I will also write more blog posts as a way of connecting through all those portals.
As usual, I will report on it at the end of 2024.
